About Nancy
Here’s my official biography:
Nancy Herkness is the award-winning, best-selling author of contemporary romance for readers who love richly developed characters and an immersive reading experience. Meet the wealthy, powerful alpha heroes who need down-to-earth women to show them how to find soul-deep love and pulse-racing passion. Nancy’s vivid writing brings to life settings both elegant and homey, while making her flawed but fascinating characters leap off the page and into your heart. Savor the thrill of falling in love by diving into one of Nancy’s books.
Author of the Royal Caleva, Consultants, Wager of Hearts, and Whisper Horse series, as well as several other contemporary romance novels, Nancy has sold over a million books. She is also a two-time nominee for the Romance Writers of America’s RITA® award.
Nancy has received many honors for her work, including the National Excellence in Romance Fiction Award, the American Fiction Award for Romance, and the Gold Medal for Contemporary Romance in the Reader’s Favorite Book Awards. She graduated from Princeton University with a degree in English literature and creative writing.
After graduating, Nancy had a varied career which included retail management and buying (including her favorite department—shoes), COBOL programming, computer systems sales and marketing, and a brief stint as a receptionist at a dental office. Once her children were in school full-time, she sat down and wrote A Bridge to Love, her first romance novel to be published.
A native of West Virginia, Nancy now lives in suburban New Jersey with two tabby cats.
When I asked my readers what else they wanted to know about me, here is what they said:
Tell us about your children: I have two grown children. I’m not sure how that happened since I am still a mere youngster. Ha! My daughter is a veterinarian who currently has three cats and a dog. My son is in the financial field and loves to travel. Both of my kids are happy, healthy, and productive—and they still speak to me—so I am a very lucky mom.
Tell us about your pets: As my readers know, I love animals and I am all about adopting rescues. Right now, I have two tabby cats, Skoda and Mobi, bonded brothers whom I adopted from a terrific foster home. When they were adapting to their new home here, they developed a way of communicating with me that involved moving around a small blue mouse toy during the night. This turned into the Saga of the Blue Mouse which unfolded on Facebook over a couple of months. The original Blue Mouse finally disintegrated. It has been replaced in the cats’ affections with sparkly pom-poms. As you can see, the brothers don’t hesitate to judge me when I’m late with their dinner.
Tell us about your hobbies: Writing (and marketing) takes up so much time that I don’t have a lot of time for hobbies. However, I have a few:
1. Reading, of course. All writers read voraciously.
2. Decorating my house, both inside and outside. I’m a nester; my home is my sanctuary, so I like it be serene, attractive, and welcoming. Yes, cat trees count as decorations.
3. Traveling. New places and cultures fascinate me, especially if there are animals involved. (See the next topic.)
Tell us about your travels: I love it when I can combine a reader event with travel to someplace exotic. Hence my trip to Edinburgh for the RARE book-signing. I saw lots of men in kilts!
I also enjoy meeting unusual creatures in unusual places. Two of my favorite journeys were to the Galapagos Islands and South Africa. In the Galapagos, the critters are not afraid of humans so you can get up close and personal. In fact, the young sea lions played with us when we went snorkeling.
In South Africa, we stayed in our safari vehicle since the animals there are often large and have lots of teeth. But we still got pretty darned close to lions and leopards and elephants.
And the big question…why do you write? The short answer is that I’m very grumpy when I’m not writing.
The long answer I’m still trying to figure out.
